GEMS ~ May 15, 2012 ~ Self Control
Wednesday, May 16th - Tuesday, May 29th
Wed/May 16th
Proverbs 25:28
In ancient times, city walls protected all those inside. Without self-control, our walls are
broken and we are vulnerable to attack.
Thur/May 17th
Acts 24:24-27
Even in prison, the apostle Paul spoke about the importance of self-control to being like
Christ. I think it’s cool how even though Paul could’ve gotten out by giving Felix a bribe – he
stayed the right course.
Fri/May 18th
1 Corinthians 9:24-27
Q: What is this prize?
A: To live in a godly way. Paul shows that we have to exercise control over our bodies so
that we do not get in our own way from winning the prize.
Sat/May 19th
Titus 1:5-9
These are characteristics of an “overseer” – a person who is to watch over God’s people.
As you lead your family, you can learn from this list of the godly standards that God requires
of His leaders.
Sun/May 20th
Mark 6:17-29
Here is a story of a man and woman who did not exercise self-control. They didn’t care about God’s ways – so they killed the messenger. This is an example of lack of self-control… getting out of control!
Mon/May 21st
1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Paul is telling the church about Christ’s return (chapter 4). Now, he says, you never know
when that is going to be, so live every day like it could be today --- be ready!
Tue/May 22nd
2 Timothy 3:1-9
Look at this picture that Paul writes of those who are opposed to God. You can probably think of people who act like this. So sad. Notice that lack of self-control is a feature of thesepeople. Partner with God to demonstrate self-control in your life so that no one mistakes
you for one of these!
Titus 2:11-14
This is a great follow up verse to Tuesday’s reading. Our knowledge of the great gift of our
salvation gives us the strength to say “No” and exercise self-control over pleasures.
Thur/May 24th
1 Peter 1:13-21
Out of love and gratitude to God, choose self-control. Through prayer, rely on God's power to help you choose.
Fri/May 25th
1 Peter 4:1-11
Do you ever have friends who try to get you to do things that you know you shouldn’t?
They really test your self-control. These verses speak to that kind of situation.
Sat/May 26th
1 Peter 5:6-11
Wow – these are really powerful verses. We are open to attack when we are not alert and self-controlled.
Sun/May 27th
1 John 3:7-10
The Bible is clear – we are either living for God – or we are following the ways of the Devil. Choosing self-control helps us to resist the Devil and to grow to be more like God. Mon/May 28th
2 Timothy 1:6-7
Don’t be afraid that you are not strong enough to show self-control. Through His power, you are able to love and have self-control.
Tue/May 29th
Galatians 5:22-23
Seeing the fruit of the Spirit in your life demonstrates that you are growing closer to God. Ask God to help you be fruitful.
Discussion Questions:
1. How would you rate your knowledge of your faith? How would you rate your knowledge of Jesus and His teachings?
2. If you feel comfortable, would you share your “thing” that you laid on the altar with the group?
3. Consider sharing an experience when you did not use self-control and it turned into a big problem.
4. Think of 3 words that describe the benefits of using self-control. (Why does God want us to exercise self-control?)
